Beta Gametrailers[]

Left_4_Dead_Beta_-_Trailer_1

A video from GameTrailers TV showing beta video footage of Left 4 Dead.

Introduction[]

Left4Dead_Intro_Clip

The intro scene for Left 4 Dead was a first for Valve Corporation, as they've never had an opening cutscene in their past games. As such, it went through many changes throughout production. Originally, Francis and Zoey were shown to have a sort of romantic tension between each other, and Louis would be a kind of comedic relief. However, this was deemed "distracting" by play testers and therefore removed.[1]

Transcript[]

2 WEEKS AFTER FIRST INFECTION

[ The camera focuses on a deceased hand with the thumb torn off. A fly buzzes around then crawls on it. The Survivors come into view. Bill puts a hand up to stop the others. ]

Bill: Hold up!

[ Bill crouches and scoops up bile with his fingers. ]

Bill: Ain't seen anything like this before...

Francis: Jesus. Don't let that stop you from smearin' it all over yourself.

[ Bill glares at Francis, stands up, and wipes the bile on Francis' vest. ]

Bill: They're changing.

Francis: Argh! Damn it, Bill! Aw, it stinks!

[ Francis wipes the goo off while Louis chuckles. Suddenly, muffled crying comes from behind a nearby door. Bill looks at the door. ]

Zoey: Someone's still alive.

[ Zoey and Bill, crouching, open the door to a pitch black room. ]

Bill (whispered): Over there.

[ Zoey turns on the torch attached to one of her M1911 Pistols and walks through the room, panning the flashlight around. The crying gradually grows louder. ]

Zoey: Hello?... Hello? Hey, it's okay... We're gonna-

[ Lightning flashes; a woman is seen sitting in a corner, and is identified as the source of the sobbing. ]

Bill (whispered): Lights off!

[ Outside, Louis hears unintelligible grumbling. He turns and sees a horde approaching. Francis opens fire with his Pump Shotgun. ]

Louis: Oh, shit. Shit! Shit! Shit!

[ Louis runs to Zoey and Bill. ]

Louis: They're coming!

[ Louis shines his flashlight in between Zoey and Bill, inadvertently startling the crying woman, who is revealed to be a Witch. ]

Louis: What the-?!

Zoey: RUN LIKE HELL!

[ Zoey runs out of the room. Bill fires a few shots, grabs the doorknob, and slams the door shut. Louis pushes up against the door to prevent the Witch from opening it. She pounds on the door. On the third strike, she pierces a hole through it and reaches for Louis, who screams in terror, steps back, and begins shooting the Witch through the hole in the door with his Uzi. ]

[ One Common Infected reaches Francis, who shoves it away before resuming fire with Bill and Zoey. ]

Louis: How do you like that?!

[ The Witch dies. ]

Francis: Stick together!

[ Louis begins to fire at the horde. A Smoker, from a fire escape above, grabs Bill and drags him until he's hanging in mid-air. Bill exclaims in surprise. ]

Francis: Hang on!

[ Francis shoots the Smoker, killing it. Bill drops to the ground. ]

Zoey: Guys?

[ Francis helps Bill up and fires his shotgun at an Infected from his left and fires at another with one hand. ]

Francis: Merry Christmas.

[ Zoey unstraps a Pipe Bomb from her waist. ]

Zoey: Fire in the hole!

[ The bomb flies in slow motion through the air. It lands several yards away, where it explodes, reducing the remaining Infected to a fine red mist as the survivors huddle behind cover. ]

[ A helicopter is seen flying overhead through the street, which Louis pursues. A Hunter is seen stalking him from the rooftops, and then follows him by leaping from building to building. ]

Louis: Hey! We're over here! We're not infected! Down here!

[ The helicopter proceeds, presumably not seeing him. ]

Louis: Damn it!

[ The screen changes to the Hunter's point of view as it hangs from the edge of the roof still stalking Louis. It then leaps from the building and pins Louis to the ground. ]

Louis: Get off!

[ Zoey knocks the Hunter off Louis and opens fire with dual pistols as it staggers back; Louis delivers a final headshot with his own pistol, knocking the Hunter onto a car with a car alarm, setting off the alarm. ]

Bill: Oh, this is gonna get bad.

[ Waves of infected pour over surrounding fences and streets. Francis looks at the horde with bewilderment. Something is heard roaring in the distance; a car flying through the air heralds its approach. ]

Louis: Run... or shoot?

[ The Tank runs towards the group, smashing the Common Infected around it as it gets closer. ]

Louis: Run or shoot?!

Bill: Both!

[ The group clamors into a nearby alley, continually shooting at the Tank and its accompanying horde. ]

[ Louis points to a ladder leading up a fire escape. ]

Louis: Get to the roof!

Francis: Go, go, go!

[ Francis stops at the base of the ladder, aiming his gun at the Tank. ]

Francis: Come on, come on!

[ Just as the Tank is about to smash Francis, Bill opens fire with his M16; the Tank retaliates by hurling its fist at him. He dodges, sending it through a brick wall. The enraged Tank grabs a slab of concrete and hurls it at Louis and Francis, who are now scrambling up the fire escape. ]

Louis: Heads up!

[ Bill reaches for the ladder; Zoey is seen shooting the horde from above. ]

Zoey: Go on, I'll hold them off!

[ The survivors climb the stairs to the roof of an apartment; the Tank climbs up the fire escape, but it gives way under its weight, nearly taking Zoey with it. ]

Zoey: Francis!

[ Francis grabs Zoey by the arm in time. Below them, the Tank falls back to the ground, the fragments of the fire escape falling onto it and crushing it. Francis and Louis pull Zoey up. ]

[ The exhausted survivors take a moment to catch their breath. ]

Louis: We made it... I can't believe we made it!

Bill: Son, we just crossed the street.

[ Bill pauses to light a cigarette. ]

Bill: Let's not throw a party 'til we're outta the city.

Notes[]

  • Beta trailers: 8/7/2008, 25/7/2008, 4/9/2008.
  • Bill is the only survivor to have a tier-2 weapon during the intro.
  • None of the survivors are seen reloading their weapons during the entire video.
  • Although Louis is pinned by the Hunter for several seconds, there are no signs of blood or scratches on him. He doesn't even seem to be hurt, although it might be that he was blocking/shoving away the attacks (which cannot be done in-game as it could harm the balance of the game if a player-controlled Hunter can't harm the pounced Survivor).
  • Francis uses a pump-action shotgun to kill the Smoker, which is known to be one of the worst choices against the Smoker due to its limited range, although the range at which Francis shoots it isn't too far off the mark. Smokers are also vulnerable to hits from any weapon, usually being able to be killed almost immediately when ensnaring enemies.
  • The Intro scene shows players what some of the basic gameplay of Left 4 Dead is, as well as the basic strategy for the game, like saving teammates who have been incapacitated by Special Infected (Bill getting constricted by the Smoker), ganging up to deal with a Tank, not disturbing the Witch, not going off alone (Louis running to the streets to get the helicopter's attention), etc.
  • Bill carries his M16 to the roof, but it is not seen in-game, and so cannot be used. It is possible that he lost it (which is impossible in-game) as the Tank grabbed a hold of the fire escape again, causing him to stagger.
  • Every Special Infected is shown in the trailer. The Boomer is not seen directly, but his corpse can be seen slumped against the wall where Bill finds the bile.
  • After the car alarm is set off and just before the Tank arrives, two Common Infected can be seen fighting each other and ignoring the Survivors.
  • Bill tells Zoey to turn off her light when she points it at the Witch, possibly hinting that Bill has seen them before the others; though it is also possible he simply knew she was Infected or saw her claws. The theory of Bill seeing one before he met the group is backed up by the large tears on the back of Bill's jacket, possibly from a Witch.
    • It is possible the Witch here targets Bill, as he shoots at at her, presumably hitting her before shutting the door. In-game, this instantly startles the Witch, as opposed to shining a light on her.
  • When the Witch breaks through the door, she let's out a scream that is only heard when she is killed.
  • There are several errors.
    • At 1:34, Bill's magazine clips through the front of the M16's magwell.
    • Zoey's flashlights change when the camera angle changes from her right flashlight to her left flashlight.
    • When Zoey throws the Pipe Bomb, the fuse isn't lit. When the camera changes to an overhead view of the Infected surrounding it, the fuse is lit.
  • Several things happen that are impossible in-game:
    • Both of Zoey's pistols have flashlights, she fires both pistols at once.
    • Witches instantly break doors in-game. The one in the trailer had difficulty doing so, with Louis blocking the door.
    • The Hunter doesn't scream when jumping across buildings, and seems to be quite agile, as it is seen moving sideways on buildings. When reaching the building it used to leap on Louis, it moves in an acrobatic way. Also, when the Hunter is shot, it makes death sound when still alive.
    • The Hunter falls on the car, setting off the alarm. In-game, Infected cannot set off car alarms, although the event shows players that they should not touch alarmed cars in any way, as to not attract a horde.
    • After the alarmed car is set off, a very large horde appears and surrounds the survivors. In-game, setting off an alarmed car only sends one horde consisting of 20-30 Infected and a few Special Infected.
    • The Tank throws a car and smashes a fence. If the Tank throws a car on a wall in-game, no damage is visibly shown. The Tank also throws an Infected as a projectile.
    • While charging at the survivors, it appears that the Tank breaks an Infected's back on its knee.
    • Zoey decapitates the Infected with pistols, though this is possible in Realism or if an "original" Common Infected is shot.
    • The Tank rips out a large chunk of wall and throws it at the scaffolding the Survivors use to access the roof. In-game, Tanks can only rip out chunks of ground, not walls.
    • The Tank is crushed to death by the collapsed scaffolding, which is indestructible in-game.
    • Zoey drops one of her pistols. This may be for continuity, as the survivors start The Apartments with only one pistol each.
    • When picking up Bill, Francis holds his shotgun in one hand. When downed, Louis holds his pistol in his left hand. When fleeing the Tank, Louis holds his Uzi in one hand, and Francis holds this shotgun in his left hand.

The Sacrifice Teaser[]

"The_Sacrifice"_Teaser
The Witch being startled by birds.

The Witch being startled by birds.

  • The trailer shows a Witch apparently being startled by birds, which could explain Bill's new line mentioned here.
  • This trailer does not contain any heard speech.
  • The three Tanks that are shown near the end use the same animations over and over.
  • When Bill raises the bridge, Louis holds the H&K MP5.
  • Bill can be seen holding incendiary ammo when five Hunters appear.
  • In some parts, Louis has no tie, possibly due to minor graphic glitches or bugs in Source Filmmaker.
  • During the final standoff on the bridge, Louis fires his Uzi left-handed, proving his ambidextrous skills.
  • There are no Tanks with the Sacrifice model in the trailer.
  • The trailer has the new Infected models, as the Smoker is not wearing a green shirt, and the Tanks are not using the original model.
  • The trailer takes place at night, but the actual game takes place in the early morning.
  • Francis is seen throwing a fit in the background while Bill offers a cigarette to Zoey at 0:12 by kicking the air.
  • In the trailer (on the last scene), Francis possibly runs out of ammo, as he later holds his shotgun like a melee weapon.
  • Francis can be seen holding an Auto Shotgun when you first see him, but the next time he is seen, he has a Combat Shotgun, likely a replacement.
  • The Jockey is seen next to a broken safe room door in this trailer. Zoey is seemingly staring at him from behind the broken safe room door.
  • This is the first trailer to feature the Katana, despite it being unobtainable in Left 4 Dead.
  • When Louis beheads an Infected with a Katana, it starts bleeding before it is even cut. Afterwards, he is no longer seen using it throughout the rest of the trailer.
  • Louis ends up holding both the Baseball Bat and the Katana; the only exception is Zoey being the only other person to hold the Katana. Also, the Katana and Louis' fingers seem transparent.
  • At the start of the video, in the scenes where Bill light his cigarette and the Survivors are walking in the docks, Louis is missing his tie.
  • At 0:30, Louis walks onto the bridge appearing to be fine, but in the later bridge scene, he is found leaning against a car for support due to his injury.
  • At 0:35, a female Infected can be seen with two large holes in her chest and abdomen, most weapons are capable of making these kind of wounds. But it is impossible for the zombie to survive gun wounds like these for long.
  • The Charger and Boomer are the only Special Infected that does not appear in the trailer. However, there is a Charger's body floating in the water during the "five Hunters" scene.
  • A hand belonging to a female Infected appears while the train is passing, holding its position the same way as the Left 4 Dead cover art, then slowly twitches to follow the Left 4 Dead 2 cover art.
  • Zoey holds the Left 4 Dead 2 pistols, but the guns are reversed (the Glock 26 in her right hand and the P220 Pistol in her left), which cannot be done in-game.
  • Bill offers Zoey a cigarette out of an entire box of cigs, contrasting a promotional screenshot where he's only handing her a single cigs.
  • Despite the trailer containing no audible dialogue, lip reading can be used to determine what characters are saying. As Bill walks off the bridge to sacrifice himself, you can see Zoey scream his name.
  • At the start, the Infected have the appearance from the first game at 0:33. After 0:35, they have the appearance from the second game. At 0:39, it's possible to see the first Infected if paused or seen at the right moment.
  • There are cars on the bridge while the same bridge in The Passing lacks any cars. The generator used to raise the bridge is either also missing in The Passing or it may be in the wrong spot since there's a generator near Bill's body in The Passing.
  • At the part when the Witch is startled by the birds, it is possible that Francis has startled the Witch, as Francis looks at the birds and then at the camera. Also the birds vanish in time before the Witch notices them, leading Francis as the only possible perpetrator.
  • In the scene where Zoey hands over a Katana to Louis, a Spitter and Smoker observe them from above and the Spitter glances at the Smoker. This may prove that the Special Infected are intelligent enough to coordinate their attacks and communicate (explaining the chatting and voice chat that can be done in-game).
  • Near the end of the trailer, the bridge immediately starts to rise as soon as Bill activates the generator while in the game itself, the bridge won't go up until all three generators are activated plus hitting the switch on the bridge itself. This could be because the Survivors had already activated the other two generators off-screen.
  • As many as five Hunters can be seen from 0:16 to 0:20. Three in the foreground, two at the left side, one almost directly below the other. Barring certain Mutations, it is generally impossible for there to be more than four Special Infected alive at once, and likewise, it is impossible for there to be more than three Hunters at once without using console commands or mods. However, considering that this is a trailer and not in-game, there can be packs of Special Infected roaming around to find and kill Survivors.
  • When Bill is about to sacrifice himself, he is holding a Molotov Cocktail and his signature M16, but the M16 is gone when he throws the Molotov at the Tanks.

E3 2009 Teaser[]

This is the first teaser revealed for Left 4 Dead 2. It features the new survivors of the game (Coach; Nick; Rochelle; Ellis), some new upgraded Infected, the Charger, and 4 new melee weapons (Chainsaw; Frying Pan; Baseball Bat; Fireaxe). The teaser was released on 1st June 2009 as Valve announced Left 4 Dead 2 on their website.

[ Three F/A-18F Super Hornet jet fighters fly over the city, while the camera comes down to view a group of Common Infected. ]

Coach: "Cause it ain't workin'."

[ Explosions start, the Infected have been alerted and start to charge toward the Survivors ]

Coach: Heh, I ain't gonna' die wait'n on salvation. Long as we still got guns, we gonna' fight.

[ The Infected are being shot, the Charger starts to charge the Survivors and suddenly Ellis runs out of pistol ammo ]

Coach: And if we run outta' bullets...

[ Coach picks up a chainsaw, while Ellis holds an axe, Nick holds a frying pan, and Rochelle holds a baseball bat as a horde approaches ]

Coach: Baby, they gonna wish we hadn't!

[ The Monsters Without starts to play as the Survivors attack the horde. The new logo, game cover, release date and credits show ]

[ Nick walks up to an Infected on the ground and smacks it with a frying pan ]

Notes[]

  • The entire trailer is based in The Parish.
  • After Coach finishes talking with "They wish we hadn't!", "The Monsters Without" from Left 4 Dead plays.
  • The gunfire throughout the trailer sounds like the Combat Shotgun, P220, and Sniper Rifle. The Combat Rifle is also heard for a single burst before the P220 starts firing, suggesting that the survivor ran out of ammo and switched weapons.
  • The bat sound effect is that of a metal bat. In-game, the bat is clearly wooden, but was originally metal in development and still appears aluminum in the game tips and the 4meleeweapons.vtf.
  • Right as the Charger charges the group, Ellis runs out of pistol ammo, yet pistols have infinite ammo in-game, though he could have simply run out of ammo in the magazine.
  • Ellis also holds his pistol with his left hand. If this is not a developer oversight, then this means Ellis is the fourth possible ambidextrous Left 4 Dead character, the others being Louis, Francis, and Nick.
  • The Charger seems to make unintelligent sounds and smashes Common Infected away in an attempt to reach the group. The Charger doesn't make these sounds in-game and, upon spotting the survivors, screams to indicate that he has seen them.

TV Spot Trailer 2[]

The second TV trailer for Left 4 Dead 2, sometimes referred to as 'Bang Bang Bang', or 'Vamonos', due to the fact it features the song 'Electric Worry' by Clutch as its theme. No dialogue features in this trailer, as it provides information through intermittent splash captions.

The hand at the ending of the video appears to be missing its signature torn-off thumb, similar to the Australian version where the thumb is still attached. The change for the ad was most likely due to content restrictions for network television (there is no blood or mutilation visible in the rest of the commercial either, though it consists of clips from the gruesome teaser).

L4D2_TV_Spot_2_('Vamanos')

TV Spot Trailer 3[]

The third TV trailer for Left 4 Dead 2, sometimes referred to as 'Midnight Ride' or 'Deal with the Devil' due to the fact that it features the fictional band the Midnight Riders song "Midnight Ride" as the backing track to the tv spot. There is no dialogue in this trailer as the spot consists of cinematic shots of the game intercut with positive reviews used to advertise the game.

Notes[]

  • Similar to the other tv spots the hand at the ending of the video appears to be missing its signature torn-off thumb. This is similar to the Australian version where the thumb is still attached. The change for the ad was most likely due to content restrictions for network television.
  • The tv spot features Left 4 Dead 2 reviews from Game Informer Magazine, and the Official Xbox Magazine.
  • This trailer uses multiple cinematic shots from other trailers, most notably the elevator shot from the opening cutscene.
  • The opening chord of the song that plays with the EA logo is mashed up with a hunters scream. This is not present in the original song.

Rochelle: [ Into a radio ] Stop the bombing run!

[ Cut to Veterans Memorial Bridge collapsing into the river. ]

Radio voice: Christ, that's coming from the bridge!

[ Coach is thrown back onto the hood of a squad car as an explosion hits a gas tanker in front of him. Nick rushes over to help him. ]

Coach: Shit!

[ Coach and Nick looks up in surprise. ]

Ellis: Ah, what the hell? Aah!

[ Nick grabs Ellis and pulls him away from the doors. Coach approaches with a chainsaw. ]

Nick: No!

Coach: God dammit! Eat that shit!

[ Coach mutilates the Infected and severs the Smoker's tongue, allowing the elevator doors to close. ]

[ Ellis collapses on the floor, and removes the tongue still wrapped around him. His pained expression turns to shock as he looks out the glass window, down at a swarm of Infected. ]

Ellis: Holy shit...

[ Coach helps Ellis to his feet as Rochelle hands him an M79. ]

Rochelle: Hey. Kill all sons o' bitches, right?

[ Ellis sheepishly nods, grinning at the grenade launcher. ]

[ The floor count changes from 5 to 4. Cut to the survivors on the stage of The Concert fighting a horde. Coach throws a gas can into the fireworks. ]

Coach: Yeah!

[ Ellis shoots the flying gas can with his Combat Rifle and it explodes above the horde of infected. ]

Nick (voiceover): I have not...

[ Floor count changes from 4 to 3. Rochelle cocks and fires a Fifty Cal from the Plantation House's porch. ]

Nick (voiceover): ...come this far...

[ Floor count changes from 3 to 2. The survivors are fighting a Tank on the bridge. Nick reloads a Silenced Submachine Gun. The Tank throws a car in the air. Coach dodges the car. The Tank charges at Ellis, who fires an M79, knocking it back. Rochelle shoots the Tank with dual pistols. ]

Nick (voiceover): ...to die now.

[ Floor count changes from 2 to L. The doors of the elevators doors open. As the survivors prepare, Coach revs his chainsaw. ]

Continuity and Timeline[]

  • It is quite obvious where the survivors are at some scenes.
    • Dead Center: When they're walking up the stairs to the roof, they are in The Hotel from Dead Center.
    • Dark Carnival: The survivors pass by the motel, and Ellis gets attacked by a Jockey in The Highway. Nick and Rochelle also climb up The Coaster.
    • Swamp Fever: The Survivors are in the Gator Village when Coach says "This used the be a nice neighborhood!" Ellis is attacked by a Charger in a burning shack which is in The Shantytown.
    • Hard Rain: When Rochelle and Ellis are attacked by a Spitter they are at the Milltown.
    • The Parish: When Ellis kicks open the safe room door they are in the convenience store in The Quarter. When the military was bombing, the Survivors were at The Quarter in the Parish.
  • Nick's final line of the trailer includes scenes from Dark Carnival's finale, Swamp Fever's finale, and the Parish's finale. The last scene, when the elevator opens, is from Dead Center's finale.
  • This intro is the only one that focuses on multiple locations, while the Left 4 Dead intro focuses on one location.
  • In the scenes leading to the rooftop opening of Dead Center, the four Survivors seem to have at least a passing familiarity with each other (most notably when Nick calls Coach by his nickname). In the level itself however, the Survivors introduce themselves in the elevator, as if they had just met.

Two Boomers in the crowd below the elevator shaft

Map and Environment[]

  • On the hotel roof, there is nothing on the table near the door. In-game, you can find health, pistols, and melee weapons there.
  • At the start of the video, the survivors are walking down the street by the motel by The Highway as they move on to The Fairgrounds. However, the street is blocked by a truck in-game, forcing the group to navigate the motel to reach the other side.
  • Also at the start, there is a sign visible at the hotel saying "Closed until further notice due to sickness". In-game, it says "Free coffee and breakfast". The sign containing the "Closed until further notice" is found in Left 4 Dead, in The Town at the convenience store across the street from the starting safe house.
  • Despite having multiple floors on the Hotel, the trailer shows several stories of floors; in-game, there's only one set of stairs leading down to the floor below them before being blocked by furniture/fire.
  • The scene showing the group fending off a horde in Swamp Fever shows the Fifty Cal on the bottom porch, while it is on the second floor in-game. Notice where the Horde is coming, as they come straight for the group; in-game, the gun doesn't tend to have any targets to shoot at. Rochelle also loads the gun before firing, yet this doesn't need to be done in-game.
  • Town Escape is the only finale not to appear in the trailer.
  • Many events in the trailer don't occur during actual gameplay.
    • The convenience store in The Quarter doesn't have a barricaded stock room with weapons or a safe room door.
    • The military bombing does not hit the group on the freeway by The Cemetery, or destroy the finale bridge with the group still on it.
    • There are no large explosions during the coaster event in The Coaster.
    • There are very few Infected on the ground floor before the survivors get to it in The Atrium.

Weapons and Mechanics[]

  • After Coach speaks at the start, Ellis is seen carrying a Combat Shotgun in hand and a first aid kit, Grenade Launcher, and Sniper Rifle on his back. It is not possible to carry that many weapons in-game.
  • When he opens the gun cabinet, there is a visible Laser Sight upgrade. Also, by the next scene, as Ellis kicks the safe room door open, he still has his Combat Shotgun, but the other weapons on his back are gone.
  • Although the Combat Shotgun is a semi-auto shotgun in-game, Ellis pumps it; it is both pump-action and semi-auto in real life.
  • When the survivors head toward the elevator, an Infected falls down and grabs onto Ellis' Sniper Rifle. This is impossible in-game.
  • When the group is fighting the Tank on the bridge, Nick comes to Ellis' aid using a Silenced SMG. When he fires at the Tank, it has muzzle flashes. In-game, it only has muzzle flashes if fired from a third-person view.
  • When Coach throws the gas can and Ellis shoots it, it engulfs the attacking Infected in flames. This is not possible in-game. One of the Infected who attempts to get to the stage is also hit by a guitar, and Nick swings the guitar on the Infected like a Golf Club.
  • At the bridge near the end, Ellis shoots a Tank with a Grenade Launcher and it stumbles back, though a direct hit does not stumble it at all in-game. Also, when using the M79 in-game, an explosion should appear, but the explosion does not appear at all. It is possible that the grenade hit it but did not explode, as this is shown in other similar games such as Modern Warfare 2, as the grenade does not blow up when a player is hit (not by the fragments but directly).
  • Rochelle uses the pointed side of the Fireaxe at one point, which can't be done in-game.
  • Ellis can be seen carrying tier-2 shotguns to the rooftop. Despite this, they are never seen in-game on the rooftop for balancing reasons.
  • The AKMN and Hunting Rifle are not used.
  • Nick seems to use only the P220 Pistol in the trailer until the end of the trailer.
  • The chainsaw seen in the trailer is yellow, although in-game, it is orange.

Special and Uncommon Infected Appearances[]

  • The Witch is the only Special Infected not to make an appearance. The Boomer, like in the Left 4 Dead intro, only makes a minor appearance amongst the crowd below the elevator shaft. Unlike in Left 4 Dead, the Hunter makes a minor appearance as well, only being seen when the Mud Men appear behind them on all fours.
  • Ellis was the target of all the Special Infected present in the video (with the exception of Rochelle getting attacked by the Spitter along with him).
  • At 2:40 the back of the Fallen Survivor is visible at The Plantation, yet they only appear in The Passing.
  • The scene where a riot Infected is shown is set in Dead Center, yet they only appear in The Parish.
  • The scene where CEDA Infected are shown is set in Dark Carnival, yet they only appear in Dead Center.
  • The Worker Infected is the only Uncommon Infected to not make an appearance.

Animation and Audio Errors[]

  • While getting helped up by Coach in the elevator, Ellis' hand clips through Coach's for a split second.
  • At the explosion scene after the jets bomb the bridge, it's the same scene from the E3 trailer, only it's slowed down a bit.
  • At 1:44, an explosion knocks Coach back onto a police car, and Nick helps him up. In-game, the car is a red alarm car (alarm never enabled). Along with that, it's almost impossible to get to the car, and in-game, when the jets bomb the freeway, players can see the car fly up and crash, but the car doesn't do that in the trailer.
  • At roughly 1:08 in the video, when Coach fires the Chrome Shotgun, it erroneously uses the Pump Shotgun's firing sounds.
  • When Ellis shoots the first female Infected as soon as they step out of the safe-house, the gore is misdirected. While a headshot to a Common Infected from a shotgun at that range should blow the Infected's head off, the female Infected simply seems to slump down with a shower of blood, instead of limb mutilation.
  • The infected that Coach punches in the face seems to attempt to escape from Coach as he is about to kill it. However, Coach kills it with the butt of his gun in a unique animation which cannot be done. Common Infected also stay on their target until they die, which is also very odd as mentioned above, the Common Infected attempts to flee from Coach.
  • Before you see the scene with the Survivors reaching the hotel rooftop, when they are retreating from hordes of Infected, you can notice that Coach is holding his Shotgun as if it was a Fire Axe.
  • While Ellis is running from the Jockey, he is holding his shotgun in one hand. Jockeys are not fast enough to catch Survivors unless they keep jumping (if they miss they get to use it again and again). Notice that the Jockey is doing the same thing as the Hunter on the Left 4 Dead trailer, but jumps on Ellis soon after he touches the car.
  • The Smoker tongue that wrapped around Ellis mysteriously appears on the floor to his right when the camera changes view.
  • On the TV spot, the tongue and blood is completely removed from this scene.
  • At roughly 2:39 where the survivors are fending off the zombies in the Concert, Rochelle can be seen not holding anything to fight the horde. But her arms are stretched out as if she was firing dual pistols. This likely was an oversight.

Dialogue Discrepancies[]

  • In the scene with the Survivors on the rooftop of Dead Center, when Ellis says "Hey, where is everybody?" and after calling out "Hello?" and then "Anyone here?", the echo of his second "Lost Call" dialogue slightly cuts off.
  • When Ellis and Rochelle are next to each other and a Spitter comes out, Rochelle says "This is some grim shit we got ourselves into.", though this is normally said when Rochelle is low on health.
  • When the Survivors reach the helicopter only to be left alone, Rochelle also says "This is not happening. This is not happening. This is not happening.", though this also gets spoken when Rochelle is low on health.

Easter Eggs[]

  • The name for this trailer could be a reference to the Max Brook's book The Zombie Survival Guide. This is extremely ironic, as both games go against the book and its "lessons" in many ways.
  • At the beginning, a dog's bark can be heard, possibly meaning some domesticated animals may either be immune or haven't been infected, yet.
  • Small helicopter patterns are visible on the chocolate bar Coach eats, which are appropriately named "Chocolate Helicopters."
  • This explains the inspiration for Nick's sarcastic remark later on; commenting on Coach's eating habits, and his favorite brand of chocolate.
  • The song used for most of the video is also called "Chocolate Helicopter"
  • Before the elevator opens, one can see what seem to be a reflection of Jimmy Gibbs Junior on the far left side of the elevator.
  • At 0:16, when Nick is opening the cash register, in the background Rochelle is standing next to a red and white box of copy paper, which is identical to that in Counter-Strike, another Valve game.
