William "Bill" Overbeck is one of the four playable Survivors in Left 4 Dead. He is a Vietnam veteran who served in the U. S. Army 1st Special Forces Group, and is the oldest of the group. He is usually seen wielding the M16 Assault Rifle (which appears as the M16A2, a real-life assault rifle used by the U. S. Military after the Vietnam War). He often has a lit cigarette in his mouth that only extinguishes when he dies.

Bill is killed prior to the events of Left 4 Dead 2's "The Passing" during the (canonical) events of "The Sacrifice". According to The Sacrifice comic, Bill was attacked by multiple Tanks after he went down to reactivate the stopped lift bridge generator to save his team from the oncoming Horde.

Bill's facial features are based on Bernard Fouquet and he was voiced by the late Jim French.

Official Description

William "Bill" Overbeck
The sacrifice bill 1280 wp Age: Unknown
Hometown: Unknown
It took two eventful tours in Vietnam, a handful of medals, a knee full of shrapnel, and an honorable discharge before the unthinkable happened: Bill ran out of wars. But now an army of infected has declared war on humanity. After decades of aimless drifting and dead-end jobs, Bill's finally gotten back the only thing he ever wanted: an enemy to fight.[1]

Background

Bill 1

Bill served 2 duties during the Vietnam war, during which he suffered a knee injury due to shrapnel boring into his knee, causing permanent damage. Two days after the first Infection, Bill was at a veterans hospital waiting for an operation, possibly relating to his knee injury. While waiting, a resident staff member attempts to make small talk with Bill regarding Bill's missing family and smoking habits. Bill then brushes him off, telling him to go practice somewhere else.

As Bill dozes off from the surgery anesthesia, one of the nurses turns due to infection and kills the operation room staff. Bill somehow staves off his oncoming unconsciousness through sheer force of will as he simultaneously fights off the infected nurse, disabling her momentarily. Defending himself with bonesaw and knife, Bill fights the sudden horde of infected outside the hospital. Back home, Bill takes out his old military fatigues, ready for war.

Out of the other three Survivors, Bill stands out most prominently as the leader of the group.

The Survivors of Left 4 Dead 2 did not meet Bill before his death. However, Francis and Louis joke that Bill would probably have shot Nick quickly due to the latter's disagreeable personality.[9] Rochelle shows understanding and sympathy to Bill's death in certain lines to the original Survivors. Both Coach and Nick have multiple lines regarding the loss of Bill if his death is mentioned.

Comic

In part 1, the comic opens with a flashforward, showing Bill gravely injured as three Tanks approach him. He reflects that he'd sacrifice anything, even himself, to save his team. A week ago, it shows the Survivors holding out in Daughtery Farm, and later, after defeating a Tank, they're taken to Millhaven by the military APC that rescued them. But instead of being sent to the Echo Safe Zone, the Survivors learn they'll be held for testing.

In part 2, Bill and Zoey end up locked in a cell, where a doctor performs tests on them while a soldier watches over. Zoey is reluctant to participate, causing the soldier to become agressive, but Bill stops him and this distraction is enough for Zoey to disarm and knock off the soldier's mask. The soldier becomes extremely afraid of Zoey more than the gun being pointed at him, this leads to the doctor to finally explain to them that they, and also he, are Carriers, and have been spreading the Infection themselves unknowingly. After they're left alone, the doctor tells them that the military is only keeping the Carriers alive due to the possibility of a cure, while he doesn't believe in one due to the virus' complicated nature. He asks to join them and escape.

In part 3, Bill, Zoey and the doctor reunite with Louis, Francis, Jeff and Annie at the armory. Bill lays out a plan to go to the train depot, but warns the "new meat" that he'll not save them if they're left behind. Along the way, Louis notices the early signs of a Tank encounter. A half-Infected Lt. Mora stops the group, threatening the Survivors with a pistol. Bill punches him when he realizes he can't be reasoned with and orders everyone to run just as a Tank arrives and kills Mora. The group faces the Tank and eliminate him when Bill ignites a jeep leaking gas driven by Louis straight at the Tank. Jeff and Annie depart from the group, and the remaining Survivors head to the train, where Bill starts it without waiting for the doctor and soldiers running after it, even ignoring Zoey's pleads for him to stop the train.

In part 4, Zoey argues with Bill's plan to leave everyone behind and to escape via sailboat to Florida Keys, eventually storming off and leaving Bill alone, leading to him have a flashback. The Survivors continue on with Bill's plan and find a sailboat, but they must lift the bridge blocking it. They activate all the generators to power the bridge, attracting a massive horde of Common and Special Infected, however, the bridge suddenly stops due to a faulty generator. As the group starts to lose hope, Bill jumps down and fights his way through the horde, reaching and activating the generator. Just as the Survivors begin celebrating, A Tank punches Bill into a building, where the initial flash forward scene plays out, leading to Bill's death. The remaining Survivors manage to make it to the island thanks to Bill's sacrifice.

Behind the Scenes

Bill's original beta design was relatively similar to his current appearance. The main differences are in his clothing: a dark olive jacket with a hood and the POW flag on the right shoulder, beret with the 5th SFG insignia, a black military assault vest with the U. S. flag, dark gloves, and dog tags on the neck.
